The Dark

by Colleen Quick

When Jule Ann goes into the kitchen for a snack, she finds something other than cookies in the jar on the table. A small Dark lump bounces out of the cookie jar, off her nose and across the table. Jule Ann and her parents watch in amazement as the Dark gobbles up their shadows and begins to grow. With each shadow it consumes the Dark grows larger.

Trying to act as the hero, Jule Ann's father tosses the hungry menace out the window. But the trouble doesn't stop there. Once outside the Dark finds many more shadows to fill its ever-growing appetite. It devours all the shadows it can find, some are very big and some are very small. It seems like nothing will be able to stop the Dark from taking over and covering the sky. It's up to Jule Ann to beat the Dark at its own game by tempting it with a small shadow she found in the house.

My children and I had a lot of fun reading this book together. Michael Martchenko's illustrations add so much to the humor in this story, it's sure to make you laugh. This story delivers the kind of playful reading enjoyment we've come to expect from author, Robert Munsch.
