The Giving Tree
The remarkable Shel Silverstein tells and illustrates a story about the unconditional love of a tree for a young boy.
As the story goes, the boy gathers the tree's leaves for a crown as he plays king of the forest. Apples to eat, a trunk to climb, and shade to cool him are only some of the ways the tree provides care and love for the boy. On into the young man's adulthood, branches to build with and a boat to sail are the tree's way to love, give to the young man and make him happy. Throughout the story the tree is happy until it seems it has nothing left to give, but even then the tree finds something out of love to provide.
"Tree" is the ultimate example of giving and love. "Boy" represents perfect acceptance and love in return. The story offers a wonderful opportunity to discuss both topics with children.
As a teacher, this has always been a mainstay of my collection and I have recommended it as a delightful read for both children and adults alike.
The simplistic yet touching illustrations are ones my second-grade students enjoyed emulating.
