The Greatest Goal
Calling all hockey fans young and old, this is a story for you! A young Canadian boy, named Paul, is eagerly awaiting the start to a new hockey season. As a player and as a fan, but this year is special. This is the first year that Canada's best NHL players will be able to play the best of the Soviet Union.
Paul's hockey hero, Paul Henderson, will be playing along side other greats like the Espisito and Mahovilich brothers, Ron Ellis, Serge Savard and Guy Lapointe to name a few. Many believe Canada will take the series quickly but the Russian players prove to be a worthy adversary, whipping Canada with a score of 7-3 in the first game. Canada takes the second game in a beautiful 4-1 finish but the Russians fight back causing a 4-all tie in the third game. Will Canada hang on to win this historical match-up? (If you're Canadian, you already know the answer as surely as you know your name!)
This book pulls at the heart strings of die-hard hockey fans. It is over flowing with love, pride and passion for the game. This story is very well written. I could almost feel myself perched on the couch with Paul and his family for the final, nail-biting minutes of game 8.
This story also shows how the love of hockey brings Paul and his family closer, especially when he gets to play ball hockey with his dad. It even brought back fond memories of watching hockey with my dad as a little girl.
