The Happy Egg

by Coreen Damm

This book is an excellent introduction to biology for the youngest of children. Yet, it is also appropriate for older children just learning to read.

Combining simple text with the illustrations of Crockett Johnson, creator of Harold and the Purple Crayon, this book introduces biology to even the youngest of children. We meet the egg shortly after she has been laid and watch as she is sat on and sat on and sat on until she is ready to hatch and fly off to lay eggs of her own. The time element is captured by the growth of nearby flower and use repetitive language.

This book makes a great read aloud for parents and teachers of very young children, but also is a great early reader for children in the primary grades. With brief sentences following a predictable pattern and repetitive use of high frequency words, this book would be an appropriate theme related guided reading selection for new readers.

Whether you are learning about birds, discovering spring, or just want to read a simple book about life, you will find this to be a valuable edition to any young child's library.
