The Bauderlaire orphans have have escaped the grasp of Count Olaf, their distant relative who would like nothing better than to make them a distant memory!
After travelling with Mr.Poe, down Lousy Lane, that traverses the Grim River, full of unnerving fish, which encircles a horse radish factory that makes everything smell bad, they arrive at Dr. Montgomery Montgomery's house(and yes that is his name). Uncle Monty as he prefers to be called is their new gaurdian and an avid herpetologist (someone who studies snakes).
Life with Uncle Monty proves to be quite enjoyable. Each of the orphans has their own room and is able to indulge their own unique pursuits. Violet has rolls of paper on which to sketch her inventions. Klaus is granted full use of the library to read to his heart's content and baby Sunny has all sorts of hard objects to gnaw on. Together, Uncle Monty and the orphans are planning an expedition to Peru. After researching all day, they take in the nightly movie in town. All is well, but alas, this is the tale of unfortunate events and you know it won't last.
Enter Stephano, Uncle Monty's new assistant, and familiar nemesis of the orphans, for Stephano is really Count Olaf in disguise. He plans to regain control of the orphans, with deadly results. Although Count Olaf fancies himself as clever, the Bauderlaire children are desperate to prove who he really is before he can harm anyone else. Will they be able to expose him in time?
