by Amber Johns

Ever wonder what you should do as you stare at your children and wonder where THAT behavior came from? Author Shirley Yuen puts her years of study and personal parenting experience into the pages that compose this very book. Yuen explains the virtues of Benevolence, Courage and Wisdom and how they apply to parenting children.

The Three Virtues of Effective Parenting is a thoughtful and insightful book written by Shirley Yuen who spent 16 years studying the relationship of parents and children. Yuen's book is a tool of Confucius ideals that are built on a foundation of the Power of Benevolence, Wisdom and Courage.

This book does not just pertain to those interested in Confucius teachings, this book is for those looking to build a stronger relationship with their children.

In reading through this book I found myself disagreeing and agreeing with varying aspects. Overall, the ideas that the author puts forth are merely there to guide parents through the daunting journey of raising children.

The book unfolds for you, the reader, to understand the three Universal Virtues put forth by Confucius. The author challenges the parents to refuse their anger and to look to reach the heart of their child through benevolent teaching. The book gives varying situational events in a short story format. Those short stories compliment the teaching of Confucius as the author reveals how to apply those teachings to real life. Learning how to make wise decisions and the courage to do so are also covered in the unfolding chapters.

As problems arise the book asks how much you, the parents are actually contributing to the problem at hand and how to look at the situation through the eyes of your child to gain some understanding of their actions. Understanding The Real Need Behind A Child's Bad Behavior and Communicating With Your Child are all vital points to this comprehensive layout of parenting skills. The author does disagree with some Confucius ideals such as corporal punishment and explains those views throughout the book.

The author goes into numerous subjects on how to prepare your child for the "real world" and guides parents on the know-how to knowing when to be a ruler, a friend, and a teacher and when each of those relationships should come into play.

If you are looking for a book that is slightly different from the rest of the parenting books out there, you might find what you want in this book. The eastern ideology may give a different perspective and allow parents to see what they need to do different and what they need to keep on doing. Parenting is all about the journey and this may be the road map that is fit for you.
