The Very Hungry Caterpillar Board Book

by Audrey DeZwirek

This board book is among the best out there in my opinion. It reaches various ages because it can be taken as a simple, colorful book with a start and an end, which can appeal to the very young, but, with an involved adult, it can be a wonderful teaching aid.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar tells the story of a caterpillar that eats various foods during each day of the week. This seemingly simple board book provides adults with a variety of visual cues to teach a child the days of the week, colors, numbers, counting, object recognition and number sequencing. It also provides the opportunity to explain how a caterpillar turns into a butterfly.

Since it is a board book, it is durable (can be chewed on without falling apart) and has easy to turn pages for young children, which gives them a feeling of accomplishment and pride. Furthermore, the images are not overly complex, but make use of vibrant, appealing colors, which will attract young children and beginner readers. Some of the inside pages are small as the caterpillar eats one apple, two pears etc. and progress to a full page size which gives children a visual cue with regards to how numbers look and grow.

This board book is a must for a family with small children and I would highly recommend it. It is a simple story and book, which provides parents and caregivers with ample opportunities for teaching and gives children a great deal of content to learn.
