There Once Was a Very Odd School
Two dozen silly limericks make up this book written by Stephen Krensky and illustrated by Tamara Petrosino. Topics include just about everything you would expect to encounter in an elementary school year. Never-ending recess, talent show blunders, playground bullies, mystery food, alien teachers, homework woes, and of course, summer vacation are just some of the subjects of this collection of silly limericks.
This book is a lot of fun just on its own, and would be fun as a read aloud. It could also be used in lessons on writing limericks and rhyming. Kids will love finding the silly rhymes like "Janet/planet/granite" and "ingredient/expedient."
This book is hardcover, but it is smaller than your typical picture book. At about 6 x 8, it would easily tuck beside the grade book on a teacher's desk, making it easy to grab for quick reading fun.
I also think it would make a nice "back to school" gift for an elementary school student who could use a little silliness to calm those first day jitters.
