Things I Learned in Second Grade

by Claudia Ann Sodaro

Do you remember what second grade was like? If not, Andrew will remind you. It's the year that you learn to spell big words like "neighborhood," write in cursive, make lots of new friends, read chapter books, write poems, subtract triple-digit numbers and resolve conflicts.

Preschoolers, first graders and second graders alike, enjoy commenting about the pet hamster in the book, all the questions Andrew asks, and what school is like for them - even if they attend a day-care center. The preschoolers I read to at storytime, in our library, each had their own tale to tell. "I have a pet like that." "I know how to write my name in crayon." Little ones love to emulate older children and this book gives them the incentive to learn and grow.

Non-readers enjoy looking once again at the simple, colourful illustrations to see just what children do in second grade. Second-grade children will feel proud when they eventually can read the book to you.

Tips

As a former second-grade teacher, I am impressed with the importance placed on accomplishment and success that Andrew experiences. Sharing this book with a child offers the perfect opportunity for parent and child to interact regarding a new school year and all that it promises.

Recommended for ages 4-7.

Pros

This book makes the perfect gift for preschoolers, but particularly first-grade children recently promoted to second grade. I would also recommend it for apprehensive second graders beginning the school year. Remember to include your favorite second-grade teacher to this gift list, also. It's a great way to start the school year and add to the instructor's mainstay collection of books.
