Time for Kids: John F. Kennedy
This biography, written by the editors from Time Magazine for Kids, spans JFK's life from his birth to his untimely death in Dallas. It covers the important historical topics of that time period as well as detailing his childhood, family life, marriage, and what he was really like as a person. In easy-to-read, beautifully formatted text set around a vibrant collection of photos and inserted facts, this book gives a realistic look into Kennedy's life. Kids will be able to understand the reasons behind events during JFK's presidency and why Kennedy was one of the most beloved presidents in history. It also includes an interview with a reporter who knew Kennedy and a timeline of "key dates" in JFK's life.
While nonfiction and biographies are sometimes not the first choice of kids of this age group, this book offers much more than standard text books on the subject. The layout and photos truly give meaning to the text and bring to life a piece of history for kids who are far removed from that time or possibly those who remember it first hand. While the book does portray Kennedy as a hero, it reads as a very unbiased account of his life, stating the differing opinions of his politics and life in general.
Tips
My third grade student, who says he hates to read and seemed a bit frightened by the prospect of a biography, was able to read it quite well, remembered many key facts, and seemed to enjoy it.
