Time for Kids: Theodore Roosevelt

by Colleen Quick

Take a look inside the life of America's most adventurous president, Theodore Roosevelt. In this book we learn about all the interesting characteristics and qualities that made this unique man one of America's strongest leaders.

We first learn about his parents: Martha and Theodore Sr. What life was like for young 'Teddy' as he grew up around the Civil War. He was a very active child always bursting with energy, but he was also very sickly. I thought it could be inspiring for young readers to learn how his father built him a gymnasium and taught Theodore to build his own body. A rigorous workout and daily exercise routine paid off for the weak Theodore. By the time he entered Harvard University he was stronger than ever.

Before Theodore Roosevelt, people didn't think to conserve any areas of America's wildlife. His love and interest in nature made it possible for us to have such national parks as Yosemite, Yellowstone and Theodore Roosevelt National Park. The adventures of Theodore Roosevelt weren't limited to nature conservation. In this biography we follow his career from lawmaker to police commissioner, from governor of New York to President of the United States.

Children of school age will enjoy this readable book. They will learn about one of the most interesting and colorful characters in history. It is full of historical photographs and fast fact side bars. The book includes a short interview with Charles Markis. Markis works for the National Parks Service. Also take a quick glimpse back across the key dates of Roosevelt's life with the time line at the back of the book.

The makers of Time For Kids have made this compact book easy to read for children in the six-twelve age group. It's size makes it seem less intimidating, as biographies go. I learned a lot about the life of Theodore Roosevelt in this book. It was very interesting and tends to spark curiosity to learn more.
