Treasure Map (MathStart 3)

by Dave Anguzza

The Elm Street Club kids have found a treasure map and are embarking on a quest to discover the hidden treasure. What could it be?

Of course, it was easy to get my kids' attention once they realized we were on a treasure hunt with this picture book story. The subject was very attractive. After all, all kids hunger for a treasure hunt adventure. What would a childhood be without one?

I found this story to be a fun read. I also liked the idea of having the kids discover buried items like newspapers and other personal time capsule objects that kids years before had buried to preserve time. My kids took to this idea immediately and wanted to bury some of their own items to be discovered in the future.

I thought it introduced a great activity for kids. The idea of a clubhouse and the Elm Street club was appealing to the kids. The watercolor illustrations were nice. Some of the background pictures like the giant characters peeking out along the trail of the kid's quest made the picture scheme a bit more interesting and creative. Finally, the suggested book related activities were a good idea that made the book more interactive and encouraged some fun, creative family time.

Tips

Don't be shy in asking questions about the map trail and treasure as a way to get the kids more involved in the story. Get them thinking about the treasure and what it might be.

Pros

A story that all kids can relate to and adults as well. A good subject for kids with inspiration to start their own buried treasure project.

Cons

Although the background scenes of clowns and carnival rides were nice, I wasn't sure if there was purpose for those particular things as part of the story.
