What's the Matter With Albert: A Story of Albert Einstein

by Colleen Kessler

From the moment I first held it in my hands, I was intrigued. Picture book biographies are a newer genre and a wonderful way for children to learn about history and the people that helped shape it. This biography is a shining example of all that is delightful about this genre. The illustrations are beautiful and realistic and the writing is lovely and approachable. Kids will be able to see themselves in young Albert Einstein.

I love that the author chose to focus on Albert's struggles as a learner. What a wonderful lesson for children of all learning styles. Just because a person is not at the top of his or her class does not mean that he or she will not accomplish great things.

While my son is still too young to enjoy this book, I am looking forward to a time when we can read it together. I have shared it, though, with several classes of third grade students. It has sparked some great discussions about doing the best you can, being who you are, and individuality. I hope it has also inspired some of my struggling learners to have confidence in themselves.

This book is on its way to becoming a favorite. I am looking forward to sharing it with more children and can't wait to read more biographies by Frieda Wishinsky.
