Dreamscapes Soother

by Erin Mariasine

Dreamscapes soother by Leapfrog is a great addition to any child's crib. You can choose from four types in order to help soothe your baby to sleep. From the first, one can either choose five different lullabies from around the world (African, Irish, Japanese, French or Classical). In the second, a poem set to calming music entitled "Goodnight Baby Bedtime Ritual." The third, a contemporary version of the song "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star." Or, the fourth, a story entitled "What Does The World Look Like?," where animals from around the world scroll across the screen.

Each selection includes more than ten minutes of instrumental lullabies and colorful images. At the end of each sequence, lights and sounds gradually dim. There is a built in night light which provides two minutes of soft light. It attaches to the crib rail or it can sit on a flat surface outside the crib. It requires four C batteries which are not included. It also features fully adjustable volume and brightness control.

It introduces children to many concepts such as world music sounds, colors, musical rhythms, lullabies, animal names, speech sounds as well as stories. It also reinforces several cognitive skills important for a child's development.

For example, Early Reading: It teaches children that stories have a beginning, middle and an end. Stories, songs and poems all have rhymes which help them learn phonemic awareness (words share similar sounds). Secondly, stories, songs and poems introduce speech sounds and word concepts. Hearing language sounds and simple words can help encourage speech production and language development.

Finally, it helps children anticipate and remember words, images and musical sequence. Thus, helping to enhance their memory.

Pros

The toy can be used for many years because children of different ages will appreciate it in a different way. As they grow they will gain different knowledge. I personally love all LeapFrog products. They're both entertaining as well as educational.

Cons

A couple of my friends who purchased this product had only one complaint. It seems to eat up batteries. One must remember to always turn it off.
