Fancy Nancy Doll

By Heather Scott

My daughter (age five) is a big fan of dressing up, and when we recently picked up a title from the Fancy Nancy book series, she instantly found a fast friend in the endearing and extravagant character created by author and illustrator team Jane O'Connor and Robin Preiss Glasser. So, when a box arrived in the mail not too long ago with the new JAKKS Pacific Fancy Nancy doll contained within, I was really curious to see how the new toy would be received.

To unveil the doll, I had my daughter help me open the box. As soon as she saw Nancy’s face, she gasped and jumped up and down. This was five days ago...and the excitement regarding this doll has yet to wane. Since Nancy’s initial reception, she’s been excitedly escorted to school for show and tell and has attended a host of tea parties and elaborate galas. And most notably, I’ve been tucking my daughter into bed each night as she clutches Nancy protectively within her arms.

The 18-inch doll is just the right size for my little girl, and all the removable baubles (hair ties, necklace, socks, etc.) and clothes (fuzzy bunny slippers!) keep my daughter happily entertained and busy. She adores dressing and undressing Nancy for numerous imaginary adventures. Nancy and her clothes are soft, but really durable (the clothes fasten in back with a thin but sturdy strip of Velcro). The only con we’ve discovered was initially upsetting – but short lived: Nancy’s dress is fitted a wee bit tight at the wrists, which made early dressing up (and down!) tricky. At first this really upset my daughter (and I was enlisted quite frequently to help). However, this has now stopped and I’m assuming the material just needed to be “broken in” (and I’m not noticing any rips!).

Tips

Matching dress-up clothing for your daughter and a companion dog are also available. According to our reviewer, "The poodle is very soft. I mean incredibly soft. My daughter is equally enamored with it and loves that it has a leash (the poor thing is getting dragged around something awful, but is holding up just fine)."

As for the dress-up clothing for kids, our reviewer says, "The dress and shoes are also adorable, but a little small. The sizing on both say three and up. I almost wish they had split the sizes (small: 3T-4; medium: 4/6; large: 6X +). But being able to dress exactly like the doll is a big hit."

Pros

The doll is soft and kid-friendly. Girls familiar with the Fancy Nancy books will be delighted to have a doll version of their favorite fictional character.

Cons

The doll clothes take a while to become easy to remove and put on.
