Hi Ho Cherry-O
by Lisa NothnagelGood game to help with counting and number recognition.
Hi Ho! Cherry-O includes a game board and a spinner, along with 4 different colored cherry baskets, one for each player, and 40 cherries, (10 for each tree). I thought these little plastic cherries were quite cute when we first received the game. After my son was born the concern was brought up that the cherries are very small. Not only are they a choking hazard but also they can sometimes be hard to pick up and are lost very easily.
That aside, this is a good game to help with basic addition, subtraction and counting skills. The object of the game is to be the first to get all 10 cherries into your basket. The youngest player takes their spin first. If you land on numbers one through four, you get to pick that number of cherries off the tree and put them into your colored cherry basket. If you take a spin and land on the dog or the bird you have to put two cherries back onto your tree. Finally, if you spin and land on the toppled-over cherry basket... uh oh, you start your game all over!
My daughter received Hi Ho Cherry-O when she was 3 and it was a great way to get her excited about counting. I was the main person that would play with her and instead of just getting her to take away or add some cherries I would say "Oh, you have 5 cherries on your tree and you get to take 2 off. How many do you have left?" She would count them and then answer 3, to which I would reply, "That's right, 5 - 2= 3"... and so on. Now 5, my daughter is well on her way to being a math pro!
With games like this to help her at home, school should be a breeze! (Optimism is a GOOD thing!)
