The Moon SpinnersBy Jane Louise Boursaw
MPAA Rating: PG
Start with a fortune in stolen jewels. Add a dash of danger and a pinch of romance. Season with Hitchcock-like intrigue and comic flair. What do you have? A mystery thriller for the whole family -- with a Disney touch. Set against the sun-bleached beauty of the Isle of Crete, this 1964 movie, based on a Mary Stewart novel, pits a young English tourist (Hayley Mills) on holiday with her aunt (Joan Greenwood) against a wily Greek jewel thief (Eli Wallach). Mistaken identities and perilous escapes -- including a nail-biting battle with a windmill -- lead the junior-miss detective to a final confrontation aboard the yacht of an eccentric millionaire (Pola Negri) with a passion for priceless gems and pet cheetahs! Because it’s Hitchcock, seemingly good guys turn out to be bad, and the main characters wind up in a hearse trapped on a narrow street by celebratory but ominous masked parade-goers. But because it’s Disney, there's very little violence and no deaths. A bit of gunplay and some peril earn this movie a PG rating, making it appropriate for kids 7 and up.
