Hungry Hungry Hippos
by Lisa NothnagelThis classic game is just as fun and frantic as it was when I was young, but the "new and improved" version hasn't renewed or improved my happiness.
The hippos are now removable!
When my daughter was playing with her cousins the hippos kept on coming off! At the time, I thought it was because all the kids were overly excited about grabbing as many marbles as they could, and with it being Christmas, of course chocolate came into play. I figured the mix of chocolate, and the excitement of a new game, forced extra, undue pressure on the levers, causing the hippos to come off. Much to the dismay of everyone that my daughter has played with since, including myself, the hippos came off very easily, even without the chocolate!
The levers also got stuck when pushed down. Since the object of this game is to collect as many marbles as you can, this stickiness created a huge problem and many frustrations.
My daughter, age 5, also finds it very difficult to release the 5 marbles to the right of the hippo. You need to press a button to get the marbles to pop out. She finds it overwhelming to press the button to release the marbles and press the lever to catch the marbles at the same time.
I do like that the hippos are great vibrant colors. I'm not sure about the earlier versions of this game but the hippos now have names. In the green corner we have Homer, in the yellow corner we have Harry, in the orange corner we have Henry and last but not least in the pink corner we have Happy.
Both my daughter and myself would have been happier with the original version. This is a classic game that never needed "improvement".
