Leapster Multimedia Learning System: Silverby Rhea V. Ewer
As with all of LeapFrog's products, the Leapster was developed in conjunction with LeapFrog's Educational Advisory Board of educators. Switch on the Leapster power button and the benefits of this board are quickly recognized.
The mobile unit itself is used to run educational software that teaches and reinforces learning for children 4-8 years of age. It covers areas of learning in math, reading, writing, art, music and creative and critical thinking. The Leapster is a wonderfully fun supplement to any child's "fun-learning" timetable.
From a construction standpoint, it would seem that tremendous attention was given to this unit, as it is highly durable yet relatively lightweight. It has a beautifully colored, touch-activated LCD screen, and easy-to-use function buttons, along with a conveniently clip-stored, tethered stylus. Both volume and headphone jacks are included to make sure that this perfect kids travel device can be tolerated by other family members on even the longest of car rides.
The unit ships with a cartridge containing 6 learning games. From this one cartridge alone, I was able to tell that LeapFrog "really has something" with this product (as though they needed me to tell them that!) The games can all be played at a range of challenge levels, making it truly appropriate for the complete age range that it touts.
It has been a little while since I've worked in the classroom, but I can't imagine my former students not racing through their assignments to be first in the "Leapster-line". And, though I never would have allowed "the other" gaming units into the classroom, I would have had no problem allowing students to reinforce our classroom learning through this device.
...keeping the young ones happy, learning and quiet... what a dream!
Welcome to Leapster.
