Mastermind
by Laureen LawrenceMastermind creates an atmosphere of challenge. I started playing this with my son when he was a seven years old and still continue to enjoy playing against him as he has become a young adult. It is a great logic builder, interesting to watch what has been played and scored on.
Playing with a child is challenging. They need to learn the process of elimination. It was exciting watching a first time player receive a peg for having matched the correct color in the correct place. You might need to take a little time playing the first few games with a new player without hiding the pegs so they can see how it works. Mastermind is geared to the logical child.
It can be a little frustrating for a child who is not used to sticking with it. It is not a quick game, but one of planning and building. It is a great game to teach children how to accomplish a difficult task. As they improve they will realize they are solving the puzzle in fewer tries.
It is a compact game which is easy to travel with as the pegs have their own compartment.
If you like playing chess then I think you would enjoy Mastermind.
