High School Musical - DVD Review
By Candice CooperMPAA Rating: TVG
What It’s About:
Jock Troy and brainy Gabriella defy East High society rules and secretly try out for parts in the new school musical. As they reach for the stars and follow their dreams, everyone learns about acceptance, teamwork, and being yourself. The fun tunes and cool dance moves are a huge bonus!
What Parents Need to Know:
High School Musical contains no profanity, sexual situations, violence, or drug/alcohol abuse/use.
The Bottom Line: I love this movie! I have to admit I wasn’t anxious to view it. It looked corny and silly—and it is. But it is so much fun! It’s clean, addicting, upbeat, and the music is great. The dancing is well choreographed and pulls you into each song, making the movie make more sense. The main characters have chemistry and an appeal that totally caught me off guard. The cast is well rounded and there’s sure to be an American high schooler your child can relate to. Parents, you might even find someone that reminds you or you when you were in high school. A note of warning: High School Musical will suck in anyone in the room. When I began watching this movie, I was alone. By the time it was over, my husband, 38 year-old brother, and both of my daughters where on the couch with me humming and laughing along.
The Scoop:
High School Musical is an anytime movie: slumber parties, family night, while riding the exercise bike, etc. I definitely recommend this movie for anyone of any age. Gender is irrelevant. Use it to open up family discussions about situations your child is having or witnessing at school. Compare how the East High kids handled their social pressures with how your child handles them. Oh, and there is a sing-along version of the movie on the DVD. Watch that one and sing and dance along. How much better can life get?
