The story of a fifteen foot tall gorilla, his best friend and the adventures they share.
In the remote African mountains there exists a legend of a fierce creature that serves as the protector of the mountain and all creatures on it. While studying the local wildlife a group of local trackers led by an American, Greg (Bill Paxton), unwittingly comes into contact with the legend.
The legend is Joe Young, a fifteen foot tall gorilla who was born and raised in those mountains. He was raised alongside his best friend Jill Young (Charlize Theron) whose mother studied the mountain gorillas until her untimely death.
Greg and Jill know that because Joe has now been seen by the villagers it is only a matter of time before poachers and fortune seekers come looking for him again.
Greg offers Joe and Jill the opportunity for a safe life. They relocate to a nature conservancy in California where a habitat has been specially constructed for Joe. Adjusting to a new location and new people proves difficult and not everyone has Joe's best interests in mind. It isn't long before an old enemy finds Joe and sets about to exact his revenge.
This is an amazing, exciting and entertaining movie for all ages. It may be frightening for children younger than five (although my three year old loves it). There are some scary scenes (i.e. poachers and angry/threatening gorillas) that may not be suitable for some children. This is a Disney movie so language and adult content are not present, although I did hear the word "hell" used once. If you are looking for a lighthearted comedy, Mighty Joe Young is not it. here are some light moments but this movie really showcases the degree of cruelty that some humans are capable of in regards to animals.
