The Little Mermaid

MPAA Rating: G

What it's about: Ariel, the beautiful mermaid princess, dreams of being human. Collecting human artifacts, spying on ships at sea, singing and dreaming of life on land is enough -- until she saves Prince Eric from drowning and finds herself completely in love. Out of desperation, she makes a deal with the sea witch, Ursula, to become human to win her love's heart. The story is a magical journey filled with singing, amazing animation, and a good, old-fashioned happily ever after.

What parents need to know: While overall the movie is mild and fun for everyone, there are a few scary moments for parents of younger viewers to think about. Ariel and Flounder scramble to escape the large, pointy teeth of a shark at one point. A thunder booming sky, some well placed lightening bolts and choppy waves makes for a scary storm sequence where Prince Eric gets tossed in the ocean before being saved by Ariel. Finally, Ursula the sea witch is one terrifying villain.

The bottom line: I loved this movie. The songs are catchy and fun, the artwork is amazing, and the characters -- from Sebastian the crusty crab to cute, lovable Flounder -- are endearing to "kids" of all ages.

The scoop: The Little Mermaid is a great "family night" movie. Pop a big bowl of popcorn, sprinkle some salt and drizzle some butter, then cuddle up on the couch with your kids. It's definitely a movie for the whole family. I highly recommend it as an addition to your home video collection.
