Safari Rush Hour Game

by Kimberly M. Hutmacher

To play, you pick a card from the pack of safari adventure challenges. Set up your gameboard to match the card you chose. Shift the elephants, zebras, rhinos and other animals to clear a path for your rover to make it through the exit gate. Once you make it through the gate, you've mastered that maze and can move on to the next! This game requires critical thinking and problem-solving skills. It requires the use of strategy and a sharp eye. There are several levels of play, including ten junior cards for 6-8 year olds and forty other cards ranging from beginner to intermediate to advanced and finally to expert. These forty cards are suggested for children ages 8 and up. My daughter felt such a thrill when she was finally able to make her rover through the maze and out of the gate. She had methodically thought through her quest, and with trial and error, eventually found the way out. This isn't a game that pits player against player. It pits player against him or her self, and challenges him or her to continue on to the next of several more difficult levels. It reminds me of a video game without the television.

Tips

Although not an issue with my daughter, I can see where some children who get frustrated easily might have problems with this game. I would suggest encouraging your child to begin the game on the most basic level, walking them through a few trial runs, and then letting them try one on their own.

Pros

This game reinforces critical thinking and problem solving skills, along with the concepts of trial and error. It's not a game where one person wins and another loses, but instead gives each player the opportunity to challenge themselves.

Cons

This game contains small pieces that could pose a choking hazard.
