Project Gotham Racing 2

by Tony Walsh

The original "Project Gotham Racing" was a hot seller--the number one racing title for Xbox. "Project Gotham Racing 2" (PGR2) outdoes the original in many ways, particularly with the addition of Xbox Live support. Racers can now compete online against international opponents, bringing a new angle to the Gotham track.

PGR2's lineup of over 100 shiny vehicles includes not only cars but SUVs too, incorporating real-world brands such as Lotus, Porsche, Ferrari, GM and Ford.

Drivers get to rip around the cities of the world, with additions including Hong Kong and Edinburgh. Word from PGR2 fans is that cities in the game are quite close to their real counterparts. There are over 100 tracks to tear up with power-slides, tight turns, and rapid acceleration. Reckless driving might be a good way to rack up Kudos points, but if you get smacked around, the damage to your car is obvious (and shameful, really), including cracked windshields and smashed brake lights. Graphic touches like this abound in PGR2, from birds sailing above the buildings to the incredible amount of detail in the cities themselves.

Offline play is pretty much all about Kudos and medals, centering on the Kudos World Series. In each car category you'll have to compete on different circuits in modes such as Hot Lap or Street Race. There are quite a few play modes here, and this adds a lot of replay value to offline gaming. The real bonus to PGR2, however, is its online play via Xbox Live. There's something cool about racing against real human opponents you've never met in real life... and taunting them when you win.
